Thriving at SJC and Beyond

November 27, 2019

This November our campus celebrated 10 years of Thrive at UBC with a month of events and initiatives focused on building mental health. The Thrive 5 plan focuses on these five easy-to-implement ways:

  • Thriving by Moving More
  • Thriving by Sleeping Soundly
  • Thriving by Eating Well
  • Thriving by Giving Back
  • Thriving by Saying Hi

Our resident-led wellness committee at the College did an amazing job hosting two weeks full of activities. Check out their calendar of activities and these resident testimonies.

We had an amazing Thrive week at St. John’s College this year! As we all know, graduate school can be extremely busy and stressful, and it is a constant struggle to find the time to do the things we need to do to maintain our mental health. Thrive week was an excellent opportunity to get together with other residents and find the time to do some fun, relaxing, and nourishing activities. Most importantly, we had great opportunities to engage in dialogue about stress and mental health issues that we face, and to work together to find healthy ways to deal with these problems. Many of us would normally find ourselves too busy or tired to participate in these types of events normally, but the convenience of having the activities and workshops within our own building made it so convenient and accessible for everyone, and really encouraged people who might not normally attend to come. Overall I thought it was a very positive and educational experience, and I’m looking forwards to Thrive week next year!

– Rehan Higgins

Thrive month at St. John’s College was a great opportunity to reflect on how to improve your wellbeing during graduate school. A number of residents organised a variety of events for the College, including an animal therapy session and stress management workshops. Some of the workshops provided valuable insight about leading a healthy lifestyle, whereas other activities simply demonstrated the importance of taking a break. This mix of activities meant that there was something for everyone and it was a real pleasure to have been involved.

– Daniel Di Benedetto

As a member of St John’s College’s Wellness Committee, participating in Thrive week was a rewarding, introspective, and engaging experience. On a personal level, I saw Thrive as a great opportunity to break down stigmas surrounding mental health. I was greatly pleased to see the resident’s positive response to our activities, the open discussions we had about mental health, and the role it plays in all our lives. I enjoyed the time spent with my fellow residents during the activities and developed a greater appreciation for the strong support network of friends and colleagues at the College.

Staff Team Updates

October 21, 2019

I am writing to share some updates with you about our SJC staff team. Please join me in welcoming Yuki Kaneki as well as saying a fond farewell to Sarah Ling. Yuki has joined us as our Membership & Guest Room Coordinator starting today!

Sarah’s contract with the College is ending at the end of November and she will certainly be missed, her contributions to the College have been very much appreciated and we wish her well as she moves on to other projects and opportunities.

Yuki Kaneki, Membership & Guest Room Coordinator

Yuki is a familiar face to many of us, as he comes from the Vancouver Summer Program team across the hallway from the SJC Office. He moved from Japan to Vancouver ten years ago with the intent to sightsee and study English for only one year. However, as fate would have it, Yuki fell in love with this multicultural city and decided to deepen his knowledge of English – so he enrolled in the Linguistics program at SFU and successfully graduated with his BA a couple of years ago. Yuki credits his success to the help he received from university and school staff, and he looks forward to supporting St. John’s College students in his role as the new Membership & Guest Room Coordinator.

Please feel free to say hello to Yuki when you are next in the Office!

Sarah Ling, Community Engagement Manager

Over the past year, Sarah’s contributions as our Community Engagement Manager included leading the development of our new website, refining and strengthening of our communications channels, and supporting College programming and general operations. Off campus, Sarah was placed in the UBC Chinatown House office to nurture community partnerships and research initiatives, which included working with teams from the City of Vancouver, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden, and Museum of Vancouver. The year prior, Sarah also served at the College (and half-time at Student Housing and Hospitality Services) as a Project Manager – Indigenous Focus, and coordinated successful projects including the publication of “Journeys of Hope: Challenging Discrimination and Building on Vancouver Chinatown’s Legacies” authored by Principal Henry Yu and translated and designed by Szu Shen. Sarah will continue to stay active in community-based work in her future endeavours.

Thank you,
Stacy

Words of Wisdom from Ian Okabe | Former Assistant Principal

By Sarah Ling
August 22, 2019

Earlier this summer we announced the retirement of Dr. Ian Okabe, who served at St. John’s College from July 2012 to June 2019 as Assistant Principal for Alumni Engagement.

As a friendly face that will be missed throughout the halls of the College and as a voice that will be missed in our inboxes (he was famous for emailing advice to residents), I asked Ian some questions to reflect on his time here at SJC.

Enjoy these words of wisdom and learn some Ian’isms!

How would you sum up your journey at SJC?
My journey at St. John’s College is a perfect example of what I have told residents and alumni throughout the years. Sometimes my sayings are known as Ian’isms. One of them is that you never know where you are going to be in the future so aim high. In 2001 I had my first sabbatical from my university and was fortunate enough to live at the College for the year as a Visiting Scholar. So imagine my surprise eleven years later when I returned to the College and was appointed as Assistant Principal (a position that never existed before). There was no way I could have planned for that or even predicted that event.

This is why I tell residents and alumni that it’s perfectly fine to plan for the future. In fact, I tell them they need to have a plan A, a plan B, and plan C, but they must also take advantage of opportunities that arise. Another Ian’ism that I always say is that “opportunity never has to knock on my door because it is always open.”

In what ways has SJC changed over the years?
In some ways SJC is identical to the College that I knew in 2001, but in other ways everything has changed.

For example, in September 2001 I was at breakfast and asked one of the female residents why she was wearing full make-up at breakfast. She looked at me and said and I quote “Ian the competition here is fierce”. I soon understood what she meant. By the Halloween dance at the end of October there were at least a dozen new couples in residence. Nine of those SJC couples got married.

That doesn’t happen anymore.

What advice do you have for current residents, or residents leaving the College?
For current residents, my advice is to try to mingle outside of your circle of one or two best friends at the College. All those people at SJC are an amazing worldwide network and the majority of people never even think about that. Wouldn’t you love to have contacts all around the world just to couch surf?

For residents leaving the College life outside of SJC is grand. It’s the real world and no longer the SJC bubble. Stay in touch with your SJC friends and you will have friends for life. But remember it takes effort to stay in touch.

Can you share some examples of distinguished alumni from SJC that you know/have met?
We have countless Managers, Directors, CEOs, Professors, etc. amongst our alumni. We also have a couple of diplomats. But the alum that stands out the most to me is John Atta Mills. John lived across the hall from me in 2001. He was a Visiting Scholar and Law Professor. He used to invite me over for tea and a chat. He gave two talks at SJC and each time it was standing room only in the social lounge. It turns out that eight years later John became the President of Ghana. Unfortunately he passed away while serving in office but the last I heard he was in talks with President Obama to spread his democracy beyond the borders of Ghana. This just emphasizes my first point that you never know where you are going to be in the future, so aim high.

What will you miss about SJC?
I will especially miss the formal dinners, home-made soup, and those long dinner conversations.

A final Ian’ism…The one truth about SJC is that everyone leaves, including the Principals. So appreciate the experience while you can because you will never find anything like it ever again in your lifetime.

Introducing our New Resident Life Advisors

August 12, 2019

We excited to announce that St. John’s College has appointed two residents to serve as the Resident Life Advisors – Shams Alanzi and Fabrício Bagatini Cachuço! These are new positions in the SJC community which officially begin on August 15, 2019.

There will be many opportunities for residents, especially our newest arrivals to the College, to meet Shams and Fabrício in the coming weeks. If you see them around the College, we encourage you to introduce yourself and discuss how they can support you.

Principal Henry Yu made the announcement below:

Dear SJC Community,

I write with the happy news that because of the deep and excellent pool of applicants for the SJC Resident Life Advisor position, we have decided to appoint two residents–Fabrício Bagatini Cachuço and Shams Alanzi– rather than just one for this new position. Because of the strength of the applicant pool, both in terms of personal qualifications and their track records of devotion to the SJC community, choosing even two out of those who applied was a difficult decision to make, and we thank all of those who took the time to apply and to think so deeply about the needs of their fellow residents as part of the application process. We look forward to the SJC community continuing to benefit from the ideas, enthusiasm, and positive energy of each of you who devoted time to this process, including those other residents who encouraged and supported the candidates to step forward.

Please join me in congratulating Shams and Fabricio, as well as welcoming them into their new roles. Because these are new positions within the SJC community, both Shams and Fabricio will be helping shape the nature and function of these roles for those who follow them, and I hope that you will all join me in helping them find their way, and giving them the room to experiment (and perhaps occasionally to make mistakes…) as they try to find the best way to help provide peer support to all of the residents of SJC. I know that as your colleagues with a long record of volunteering their time and energy for the betterment of others at SJC, Fabricio and Shams enjoy a deep reservoir of respect and good will already; however, as they reach out to you over the next year with the goal of helping create a stronger and healthier community, I hope that you will each support them even as they pursue the goal of supporting you.

Officially, Fabricio and Shams will begin their roles on August 15, but please join me in thanking them personally for stepping forward to take on this important role, and feel free to begin sharing with them any ideas that you may have for helping them.

Farewell to Ian Okabe, Assistant Principal

August 11, 2019

This t-shirt was gifted to Ian by the SJC Office.

From July 2012 to June 2019, the St. John’s College community was fortunate to work with Dr. Ian Okabe, Assistant Principal for Alumni Engagement. Having lived at the College twice prior to his appointment as Assistant Principal, he was a familiar face that tirelessly supported and mentored our residents. Every evening at the dining hall, Ian could be found at the same table, chatting with residents or hosting SJC alumni.

He has helped gather many stories from our alumni regarding how living at SJC was a transformative experience that changed their lives in a myriad of ways. He was also famous for emailing advice through the SJC list-serve on a wide range of useful topics.

All of us at St. John’s College would like to send our warmest thank you to Ian. We understand Ian continues to be in close touch with many SJC alumni. In fact, he has had dinner with 9 alumni in the six weeks since his departure from SJC. Stay tuned for an interview spotlight on Ian!

More about Ian:
Ian was born in Calgary, Alberta but grew up in the suburbs of Vancouver. He has lived across Canada, and attended universities in both Canada and the United States. Both his Honours Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. are in Geography from the University of British Columbia. His research specialty is climate diagnostics which he applied to discover the North American Monsoon. Ian taught at the University of the Fraser Valley for a decade and retired as Head of the Weather Centre for British Columbia and Yukon.

SJC couple visits after a decade

By Stacy Barber
August 12, 2019

Once in a while, alumni from St. John’s College make a special visit to the office to say hello, long after they have lived in residence and completed their degrees. They share stories about their careers and better yet, some couples have gotten married and created new journeys together.

This summer, Denise and James Chiltin scheduled time during their cross-country road trip on July 31 to visit their old stomping grounds at UBC. It was a pleasant surprise to catch up with them! They were amazed how much the trees had grown in the ten years since they left, and it was fun to show them changes to the College including our Johannean Journeys paper boat installation and all of the flags in the Dining Hall.

For Denise and Jim, it was great to revisit the same table in the Dining Hall where they first met.

We hope the rest of their road trip went well and that they enjoyed their visit with another SJC alumni couple on Vancouver Island. Great things can happen in the Dining Hall where we gather “the world around our  table.”
