Johannean Windows in Time | Artists: Denise Fong & Alan Chiu 2022

Vinyl decals on glass windows art installation

Permanent Collection of St. John’s College, University of British Columbia

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the founding of St. John’s College UBC, Johannean Windows in Time honors the legacy of St. John’s University Shanghai (1879-1952), and its alumni who established the College at UBC Vancouver campus in 1997. These storytelling windows celebrate the College’s vibrant growth through nurturing deep friendships, academic excellence and public service that are grounded in St. John’s University’s motto “Light and Truth” – valuing honesty, generosity, justice and integrity.

Johannean Windows in Time echoes Waterscapes: Johannean journeys (2013) by artist Gu Xiong, which visualizes the multifarious migration journeys taken by generations of Johanneans to and from the College, resulting in rich togetherness of histories, memories and material culture.
