Junior Fellow Speaker Series

November 29, 2013 @ 6:00 am - 8:30 pm

Mike Alexandersen – A tour though the outer Solar System

“Why is Pluto not a planet?”, “Is Pluto still part of the Solar System?”, “Am I pronouncing Uranus correctly?” “Is Neptune near the edge of the Universe?”, “Can Mike write a horoscope for me?”. If you’re not sure about the answer to any of those questions, you should come to my talk.

I will begin my talk with an introduction to the Solar System, to clarify what is where, what a planet is, and the huge scales involved even inside our local astronomical neighbourhood. I will then describe a summary of my thesis work, which has involved observations of the outer Solar System with the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope.

Chantal Mustoe – The Chemistry of Life

Every wondered why ice floats or why fish don’t freeze in the lakes over the winter? How do plants ‘drink’ and what is surface tension? Come find out about the importance of water in our lives and the chemistry behind it.

H2O, it’s not just what you drink.
